To Toronto
I spent last Friday afternoon with my friend Wendy, just hanging out around town. She’s from the other side of the world, she is. New Zealand. The land of Jonah Lomu, Peter Jackson and Shortland Street. She’d just spent a week in a car with three friends from Edinburgh (though not from Edinburgh, if you know what I mean), travelling all over the island. She’s seen more of Ireland than I have.
Wendy likes Ireland. Dublin too, I think. She didn’t seem to mind traipsing randomly through the city, even to parts I never haunt. I’m kind of functional about going to town, you see. I do what I’m there to do and then I leave. I don’t wander, or explore. Not here anyway. I really don’t know that much about the city, what’s hot and what’s not. I’m a terrible guide, but I did my best. She didn’t seem to mind.
She’s off to Canada now, she is. Montreal, to begin with. They’ve got an underground city there. It’s true. She got a work visa for a year. I almost did that myself, last year. Didn’t have enough money in the bank. I still don’t. I settled for a flying visit instead. To Toronto. Great city. Some places intimidate me, but I really felt at home there. I wandered, and explored. I still have lots more wandering and exploring to do. Six days just wasn’t enough. I think I left my heart there.
I’m going back there soon, to Canada. To Toronto. And I’m going with her — no, not Wendy, I mean her — I’m going with her and we’ll get happily lost on streets that go on for miles. And maybe if we’re lucky, we’ll find my heart, and I can give it to her. For safe keeping.
