High Anxiety

This morning I received an invitation for an interview with the head honchos of the journalism programme at DIT. Twelve days and counting.

I was hoping that they might skip the interview part. I haven’t had an interview in almost three years; that was with the large music store — I got the job. And it’s been four since my last academic interview; that was for the print journalism diploma course at Ballyfermot — I was accepted.

So you would think that I’d be confident, what with my previous record, no?

No. And emphatically so.

I know I’ll be okay (not exactly fine, but okay) when I get in there and start talking. But right now I’m bricking with anticipation. I really was hoping that they might skip the interview part. I’d much prefer a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ in the post. I can’t deal with this kind of uncertainty; I haven’t got the strongest of constitutions.

I just know they’re going to show me the portfolio I sent with my application, filled to the brim with red markings where I made stupid spelling mistakes. They won’t care that, in truth, most professional journalists can’t spell to save their lives (a journalist told me that once, so it must be true). What they’ll do is, they’ll point and they’ll laugh.

And what’s more, they’ll probably read this and discover how neurotic and paranoid I can be. Indeed, by writing this, I could well be making things worse for myself. They’ll point and laugh some more. And have the men in white coats waiting for me when I leave.

Then again, since this is all in my head, things will probably go a lot smoother than I expect. And hey, if I don’t get in, I can always try again next year.

But that’s not to say I don’t want to get it over with as quickly and painlessly as possible. Like right now.
