Great use of Flash, and some wonderful fodder for inspiration. Though I have pretty much locked down a good design for the class magazine. It’s classy (excuse the pun). Arts & Culture ·

Paper Spends More Time With Its Family
A curious title; it’s almost the opposite of what the article discusses. And the author neglects to mention the growing popularity of the Moleskine (because it contradicts parts of the thesis, maybe?). Arts & Culture ·

COLOURlovers
Good site. A little too heavy with the ‘love’, though. Arts & Culture ·

Download the Bitstream Vera font family
If you don’t already have it, that is. Arts & Culture ·
Motion induced blindness [c/o MetaFilter]
Very cool. Would this have any significance in terms of drivers’ vision, perhaps? Interesting ·
“The space between the parting of the lips [the mouth] and the base of the nose is one-seventh of the face.”
Also: “The thickness of the head from the brow to the nape is once and 3/4 that of the neck.” I’ll try to remember that. Arts & Culture ·

The decline of Trivial Pursuit
(Also: listen to the NPR version) Why the decline? Well people don’t have, or won’t devote, the time for board gamees anymore. They’ll still buy them (even though they’re quite expensive) but rarely play them. If no one plays Trivial Pursuit, then it’s hardly going to be a cultural icon anymore… Arts & Culture ·

The world’s biggest Devo fan
I hereby confess my own love of Devo — especially the last album before the first break-up; it’s the Eighties through and through, and it’s bloody marvellous. Sound & Screen ·
High school jazz band covers Wolf Eyes for a school performance [c/o ToT]
I wonder what the teachers made of it. Sound & Screen ·
Overheard in Dublin
An homage to Overheard in New York, perhaps? Interesting ·

VideoLAN might disappear due to patent legislation
They have to kill everything that’s good in the world, don’t they? Interesting ·
Sasha Frere-Jones reviews Slint on their one-off reunion tour
I could have gone to see them here last month, but money is tight, and I didn’t want to spoil the magic. Live shows can kill it for me. In a way, I agree with Patrick Bateman’s views on the live music experience. Sound & Screen ·

The Thumb-sized Heart of TK the Cat
I’m not embarrassed to say I cried when I read this. Interesting ·

MGM leaves its private web directories open to the public
Speaking of MGM, their movie channel was added to my basic cable this week. The only noteworthy thing to say about it is the wildly inappropriate scheduling of 18-cert films well before the watershed. If it was a subscription channel, that would be different. But it isn’t. I don’t mind hearing ‘fuck’ on TV before 9pm, but I don’t think the majority would agree. Interesting ·
NWA’s Straight Outta Compton, with everything removed except the profanity [c/o WaxyLinks]
It goes without saying that this is NSFW. (See also: Fuck Tha Police: the ‘edited’ version) Sound & Screen | 1 Comments ·
I’ve Got Something in My Front Pocket for You
This, dear reader, is why I love South Park. (You know I wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be a real Noel Coward tune, too.) Interesting ·

Factsheet 5 returns
I’ve only ever had a passing interest in (actually it’s been more like an awe of) fanzine writing. A long time ago I thought about maybe compiling some of my writing from this site into a zine or a chapbook, and distribute it through the site. But I barely felt confident about the blog as it was… Arts & Culture ·
Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore on the power of the mix tape
Call me a luddite, but mix tapes for me are far superior to mix CDs. Even something simple like the shift of mood between two sides of a tape can’t be replicated on a single disc. They’ve always been more about emotion, about capturing the moment, than about sonic fidelity. Sound & Screen ·
BlogTO’s interview with Sam Javanrouh, the man behind Daily Dose of Imagery
He says that Toronto isn’t a great place for taking photos, but I beg to differ. His own shots obviously contradict that statement. (See also: bloggers discuss professionals’ ignorance of photoblogs.) Arts & Culture ·
