New-look Guardian unveiled

There’s a PDF of the front page here. Hmm. I don’t know. The blue strap masthead seems a bit too close to the relaunched Independent for my linking. And typographically? It was close to perfection anyway; I don’t see why they had to go and mess with it. Strikes me as a step backwards on first impression. What do you think?

i’m more concerned about how this will impact content. the indy is dreaful since it web tabloid. and rubbisher’s press gazette interview does suggest that the new size will impact content

I am actually rather excited about this. There’s something about the Berliner format, it’s so modern, so, so, European.

I don’t like the new masthead - call me a stick-in-the-mud but it doesn’t have the same authority or gravitas as the old one. I guess time will tell, but it seems weaker to me. The lack of capitals is almost disrespectful to a paper that deserves respect. A capital letter makes a noun proper. Maybe they’re trying to stress the meaning of the word ‘guardian’ rather than have it appear as a name. It could work.

We’ll see.

markham - hadn’t figured you for the case-sensite type :)

the masthead - something about it reminds me of eddie shah’s paper. today, wasn’t it? i like it myself, it’s … unassuming, not too assertive. lower case works for me though, it’s like a quiet tone of voice. but, to be honest, if it hadn’t been for the piccie of judy dench, i wouldn’t have spotted the paper in the newsagents this morning. the actual title part is a tad too far down the page.

I’m not too bothered with the new masthead typography-wise, now that I’ve had a couple of weeks to think about it. It was a shock at first, but the lower-case thing is just a standard graphic design device (it’s the descender on the ‘g’, you see).

What irks me much more is that blue banner, which overwhelms not just the nameplate, but the whole front page. I have my own ideas about how it could be improved, but I’m saving them for the proper post I’ll be writing about the redesign any day now. (I got carried away redesigning this place, no time to get my thoughts on paper.)
