Champion of Magazines: An Interview with Andrew Losowsky
More inspiration for that project I’m currently mulling over. See also: Magazero; MagCloud; Newspaper Club. Arts & Culture   ·

BBC Genome: The Complete Broadcast History of the BBC
More historiography! A perfect example of the permanence of the web given focus. Arts & Culture   ·

Wikipedia entry on Neon magazine
Remembering the late, lamented Neon – the original version, that is. One of the best film magazines ever. Posting this here as inspiration for a new project I’m kicking about in my head. Arts & Culture   ·

On Wikipedia, Cultural Patrimony, and Historiography
This got me thinking about something else: in a sense, blogs can be personal historiographies, can they not? Interpreting historiography in a personal sense seems to describe what I’m doing with my blog at the moment, creating a record that I might someday look back on. Arts & Culture   ·

Why my kids are pop-culture illiterate
I’m only posting this here as an example of the kind of smug elitism – the attitude that popular or ‘corporate’ culture equals low culture and is therefore unfit – that I truly detest. As if there’s some virtue in their kids being unable to relate to their peers on a basic cultural level! Bullshit of the highest order. Arts & Culture   ·

RFID tokens on the Shenzhen Metro
Making the future more palatable by combining traditional and hypermodern forms of money. Funny how it’s only for the tourists, though… Interesting   ·

Dimensions
A simple way to put distant things or events in a more local, easily comprehended perspective. Cue a thousand school projects! Interesting   ·

Let’s Scare Jessica to Death
The AskMeFi hive mind recommends books that analyse horror movies. I’ll be adding some of these to my wish list. Arts & Culture   ·

Journalism Warning Labels
As the photos suggest, these are pretty much ready-made for the Daily Mail. Media & Journalism   ·

Vanity Press Plus: The Tweetbook
Tempted to do this for my own tweet archive. Arts & Culture   ·

Wikipedia entry on ISO 3166
The standard for international country codes. I just love that this exists. Interesting   ·

Sharpie introduces the Liquid Pencil
Why is this not available everywhere? This separation of territories crap has to stop. Me want now! Interesting   ·

Play Mastermind
It’s a bit more quick-fire than the real thing, but still all kinds of awesome. Sports & Games   ·

Documentary on One
RTÉ Radio 1’s documentary and podcast archive. Why aren’t they promoting this more widely? It’s a fantastic resource, the kind that makes the licence fee worth paying (even though RTÉ denies the licence fee funds online activities). Arts & Culture   ·

HTML5 Boilerplate
The easy way to upgrade to the latest standard. Although it’s not really a standard yet, since it’s not fully supported by today’s browsers. It’s like 10 years ago all over again. See also: 28 HTML5 Features, Tips, and Techniques you Must Know. Interesting   ·

How to Create a Stop-Motion Animation Movie on Your Mac Using Your Digital Camera and iLife
For another future project I’m mulling over. It’s how they make Robot Chicken, more or less, so that’s good enough for me. Interesting   ·

Fixing the Bus System
“The bus system in every city I know is broken, hardly usable, and we hardened urbanites only cope with it because we’re so used to it.” The symptoms he gives for this brokenness are all ones I would identify in my own experience. Some can be remedied to an extent by providing better information, online or otherwise. But I also see his point that such solutions might only be for the tech-savvy, or those with access to mobile devices (not everyone has an iPhone, whatever Apple et al want us to believe) [c/o del.icio.us/blech]. Interesting   ·

Russell M Davies: On the structure of time
“I think the explanation is simple: weeks make sense to us, months just don’t.” This! Interesting   ·

Notes on Susan Sontag’s On Photography
Saving this for when I eventually get round to reading the book. Arts & Culture   ·

Google Cheat Sheet
That’s three years of university down the drain, j/k. Interesting   ·

Making ambient music on a MacBook
Some good links and advice here, but why is Ableton always the stock answer for such questions? Garageband and the like work just fine. Most people simply want to dick around with making sounds; they don’t wanna be George bleeding Martin. Arts & Culture   ·

The Mona Lisa Curse on YouTube
Robert Hughes’ documentary on the corruption of art in the commercialised world (previously broadcast on Channel 4). His disdain for the bullshit of the contemporary art world is refreshing. Arts & Culture   ·

Devour: hand-picked videos
Basically YouTube, curated. It would surprise me if the Google boffins aren’t working on something just like this for the site itself. Arts & Culture   ·
