Hello, world. I’m MacDara Conroy, and this is my blog.

Weeknotes #700

Seven hundred weeks, eh? That’s a long time blogging. More than 13 years, in fact. Which reminds me, I completely forgot my blog became a teenager on 1 November last. That’s crazy! So is the fact that I’ve had a website in some shape or form for more than 15 years now. Whodathunkit?

Anyway, enough reminiscing. There’s some new stuff from me up on the new-and-improved Thumped. For one, my review of Jupiter Ascending, the new film from the Wachowskis (and a very enjoyable one it is, too). And at long last, the latest edition of my Noises On! column, surveying my last 12 months or so in heavy music.

I have to admit, I had half of that last piece written many months ago, but kept hitting a wall when it came to my listening. I just wasn’t that into hearing new stuff for a while there, let alone writing anything about it. That goes for any genre, even though my scope is as wide as the term ‘heavy music’ will allow. Sometimes you just have to wait till your mojo comes back.

What else is new? I went to that new Weight Watchers class last Saturday, and was down another couple of pounds. I wasn’t sure what would happen, what with it being a different day, and a different time of day, but how can I not be pleased with that? The last few weeks have been consistently downward on the scales, for the first time in forever. And I feel good about how I’m eating day to day, which is just as if not more important.

It’s a process, but I’ll tell you this much: cutting back on the amount of carbs I eat (and filling out the gaps with vegetables, and a bit more protein) has made a lot of difference, both to how much I eat in general and how hungry I feel throughout the day. I think it’s making more difference than my general activity, cycling and walking and the like. I can’t really judge in terms of energy levels as yet; let’s see how the rest of spring goes.
