Hello, world. I’m MacDara Conroy, and this is my blog.

Can’t believe this one got no traction. Is 9.30am too early in the day or something? > @MacDara #tweet

NXT TakeOver: Dublin had been rescheduled to June next year. They’re clearly desperate not to cancel it and lose the gate since half the NXT UK roster was cancelled #tweet

I believe Cher isn’t very partial to steak pieces served in a creamy sauce… I can hear someone beside me say she really don’t like beef stroganoff, no #tweet

Going by my latest collection of lumps, I’ve become very allergic to midge bites all of a sudden #tweet

Here’s a thing about short-term versus long-term thinking: universities virtually imprisoning their students for rent extraction can say goodbye to that alumni investment down the line #tweet

Something I did not expect this Saturday morning was being moved to tears by Drew Barrymore and Tom Green reconnecting #tweet

Buoyed by news that the BOSJ might happen this year after all, I’m ploughing through the #G1CLIMAX30 matches I care to see (and yes that includes the Yano ones) #tweet

Film review — Downsizing

I read a thread on Twitter a few months ago that used the term ‘racist anti-racism’ — to describe efforts to express anti-racist sentiment, or do anti-racist work, that employ racist tropes, whether due to ignorance or hamfistedness or what. There’s a lot of it in Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, a mess of a satire that consistently blunders into blind alleys whenever it tries to make a political point, and ends up doing more harm than good. IKEA monkey. Like, even the provenance of the coat deserves a mini-series at least > @brendan_mcaleer #tweet

###

Film review — Antebellum

It’s one bravura visual sequence at the end, and written backwards from there, such that even The Village stands up to closer scrutiny. It does an unforgivable disservice to the message when the medium is this poorly constructed. More…

It’s my grandad’s birthday today; he’s pretty close to three digits and I’d like him to enjoy that so let’s cop on with the distancing and masks and hand washing, OK? #tweet

Dunnes Stores shop assistant with the condescending attitude: I’m not a ‘speak to the manager’ kind of person, but I was one step away today, believe me > @MacDara #tweet

I read the Rolling Stone list and, besides the expected genre biases, it’s nice to see Double Nickels hold that sweet spot in the middle #tweet

Film review — High&Low The Movie

I’m distracted by the veneer of toughness, the trappings of machismo on display here. The faces too handsome for more than a scratch or a blotted-on bruise; the clothes too expensive to get more than a scuff of dirt. The lit cigarette that never reaches the lips. The sheer absence of sexual tension (if there’s any eroticism, it’s of a profoundly chaste kind). I’d say it’s all an act, but the spirit of brotherhood seems real, and the fight choreography is impressively tight, so they’re not faking everything. More…

It’s the year 2020 and I have to wait for a temporary password by post to get my P60 so I can file my tax return #tweet

Soooo @GameStopIE’s preorder system is a bit of a shambles so I won’t be booking our Xbox Series X today, it seems > @MacDara #tweet

Look, I know Verotika is like horror’s The Room, but couldn’t Shudder have spent the money acquiring the rights to something actually worth seeing? #tweet

It’s a shame May doesn’t like the first ANOES, but I think we can all agree that the second one is Good Actually > @Nyxfears #tweet

Film review — Five Element Ninjas

As the 1980s dawned, the cracks were clearly beginning to show in Shaw Brothers’ studio-bound kung fu productions. As much as this one has all the action and intrigue you’d expect, the obvious soundstage setting and magenta-paint bloodletting mark it as a relic from a time since passed. It’s fine, but only fine. The Xmas sweet treats stock is in Lidl. I repeat, the Xmas sweet treats stock is in Lidl #tweet

Pet gripe: the capital T in T-shirt describes the shape of the shirt, so it’s never ‘t-shirt’, and I don’t like ‘tee-shirt’ either (though I’ll accept ‘tee’ on its own) #tweet

Browning meat is apparently anathema in Irish cuisine so Irish stew, coddle et al can go straight in the bin > @notreallyjcm #tweet

This is tiny in the big scheme of things, but it would be great if WWE would finally cancel NXT TakeOver: Dublin so I can get my money back #tweet

###

Catching up on the news: so Dublin is at Level 2 but with ‘modifications’, which means it’s not Level 2, it should be Level 2.5 or something. But you can’t say that! Boo scary! > @MacDara #tweet

Even with Ira’s guitar freakouts, Yo La Tengo provided a perfectly reasonable experience, three times in 12 months > @tabsout #tweet

Film review — Ip Man 4: The Finale

The American white devil really gets a skewering in this final instalment of the Ip Man series, where a racist Scott Adkins beats up old people for kicks; more subtle is the anti-Japanese sentiment, but it’s also there. More…

Brilliant new video essay from Dan Olson. Big surprise that it’s not really about flat Eartherism… but it’s also exactly about that. #video

I just found the website files for my journalism MA class’ magazine, which I thought I’d lost in a storage snafu > @MacDara #tweet

###

Film review — Ip Man 3

Too much story, too little time: this one takes a big turn in the third act, when the A plot evaporates (I guess Mike Tyson’s pretty expensive) and the B plot takes its rightful place, but doesn’t have enough breathing room for a satisfactory outcome. The hospital lift fight is a great touch, though. More…

Wasn’t expecting a Saturday delivery since they’re not a thing here but I’ve now got my replacement Blonde Redhead LP. Top marks to @normanrecords for customer service #tweet

I don’t regret my UCD arts degree one bit. But if I had the choice (with points levels) of today back then, I would’ve got offers for every journalism BA in the state. Just saying… #tweet
