I had to read about five Wikipedia articles to get a handle on the story before I could even start with this, despite having watched the original series not so long ago, so yeah, it’s one of those. You can dress it up with all the philosophical guff and transgressive imagery you like, but at root Evangelion is just a harem anime. Then again, if it didn’t exist then maybe we would never have had Discordance Axis’ The Inalienable Dreamless, so swings and roundabouts. ★★½
